Livestock and fisheries production play a very important role in food, income and nutritional security of the population. The subsector employs about 90% of households directly or indirectly. Enterprises popular in the county are dairy, poultry, bee-keeping and fish farming (Nile Tilapia and Catfish).
The subsectors have implemented a number of development projects, which have played key role in production and marketing of products in the county. These projects include; Fish Farming Enterprise and Productivity Programme (FFE&PP) under Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) and Economic Recovery and Poverty Alleviation Programme (ER&PAP), Smallholder Dairy Commercialization Programme (SDCP), Southern Nyanza Community Development project (SNCDP), Njaa Marufuku Kenya (NMK), both implemented jointly with the department of agriculture, Eastern Africa Agricultural Productivity Project (EAAPP), National Agriculture and Livestock Extension Programme (NALEP) which has exited and replaced with Agricultural Sector Development Support Programme (ASDSP).
