Famers from Nyamira south sub-county arrange coffee seedlings at Nyamaiya chief’s camp.
County government of Nyamira in partnership with Kenya Coffee Board had procured coffee seedlings of Batiani variety.
Speaking during the arrival of seedlings at the Headquarters, Nyamira South Sub-county crop Officer Mr. Edward Ouda said, “County of Nyamira plaid a vital role during the procurement as we provided transport and logistics as our partners offered payment of seedlings after which they will be distributed to farmers.”
Mr. Ouda added that the 10,000 coffee seedlings that were purchased will be distributed to three of the county’s five sub-counties of which Nyamira South and Manga sub counties will receive four thousand seedlings each while Masaba North receive two thousand seedlings.
“The main aim of this is to promote our famers with certified seedlings which can improve levels of coffee production, to boost yield and harvesting within our county,”added Ouda.
The seedlings were procured after the extension officers took farmers through various training sessions and farm exchange visits on coffee production and other crops across the county. An additional of 5,000 seedlings were added to help fill in the gap which was remaining for the targeted farmers within the selected sub-counties.
“We as the Coffee Board Agency, our wish is to ensure we work hand in hand with the County government of Nyamira to promote farming by providing our farmers with seedlings which are of high yielding. We urge farmers to put into practice all the technology they have acquired from various trainings and exchange farm visits by extension officers,” noted Mr. Eric Onyuka of Coffee Board of Kenya.
“We have been working with different Counties across the entire Country but through our follow-ups and assessments we have carried out, Nyamira is doing better with the seedlings we have been supplying to farmers as per the production rate during harvesting season, added Onyuka.
“On behalf of the County government of Nyamira and farmers, I take this chance to say thanks for the continuous support we have been receiving Coffee Board and we wish to continue working as a team to ensure we uplift our farmers.” Added Ouda.
