Nyamira County government today disbursed Sh66 million to needy students in form of bursaries.
The County Governor Amos Nyaribo who presided over the distribution of the money to the students at Nyamira’s Uhuru garden, urged the beneficiaries to work hard and realize their academic ambitions.
The 22,000 beneficiaries were identified by a committee that verified their parents or guardians financial status.
“We will closely monitor your performances. We will withdraw our support for those who will not work hard or who will be involved in indiscipline cases,” the Governor warned.
He urged parents to give their children a leeway in choosing courses they wanted to pursue after completing secondary education.
“Parents should allow their children to take courses that have high employment opportunities even at Diploma levels despite qualifying for Degrees disciplines if that’s the possible way of getting employment quickly,” he said.
He urged school leavers who did not qualify to join universities to enroll at Nyamira National Polytechnic and area Technical Vocational Training institutes to pursue various courses.
“They can enroll for certificate courses which they can later upgrade for diplomas that will enable them do degrees,” the Governor said.
Governor Nyaribo said the bursary for secondary schools was introduced in 2013 in the county despite being a national function upon realizing that there were many needy cases in the region.
“I know this County bursary is insufficient and that’s why I initiated a scholarship scheme where we are fully supporting bright but needy students to pursue their secondary education,” he said.
The County Assembly Education Committee chairman Samuel Ogeto asked secondary schools Heads to utilize well the bursary.
The function was also attended by County Assembly members, County Executive Committee Members and secondary schools principals, among others.
