Nyamira County Governor H.E Amos Nyaribo was today installed as the patron of the Kenya Red Cross Society for the devolved unit.
The ceremony was conducted by the Kenya Red Cross Society, Western Kenya Regional Governor Geoffrey Kipngetich Korir at the Governor’s boardroom.
It was witnessed by Red Cross Senior officials in the region and top County officials.
While responding to a request made by Mr Korir, the governor accepted to come up with a memorandum of understanding that will enable the Society to source for funds that will assist the body’s activities.
“ The work of Red Cross is not only to manage disasters. It is currently involved in mentoring youths to avoid use of drugs and unwanted substances,” Mr Nyaribo said.
He said the society also deals with wellbeing of mankind through provisions of water, health and food security activities.
The governor supported a proposal by the Kenya Red Cross to enact a law that will allow County governments to allocate funds to support the humanitarian body carry out it’s activities.
Further, he accepted to provide offices for the Society's County officers once the construction of the Fire fighting building is complete.
Mr Korir said the Kenya Red Cross was a public institution through an Act of Parliament.
“We therefore want a legal frame work that will allow County governments to support us financially,” he noted.
He said plans were underway to carry out membership drives across the country.
“ We are targeting at least one percent of each County residents to be our members,” he said.
The Red Cross Regional manager Hellen Cheruto said the role played by Red Cross was important as it’s members have no boundaries in discharging their duties for the wellbeing of mankind.
Those in attendance from the County Government side included County Secretary Dr Jack Magara, County Attorney Erastus Orina, County Executive Committee Members Geoffrey Morara (PMS), Grace Nyamongo (Sports and Gender), Alice Manoti (Agriculture), Benard Maina (Trade) and Dr Timothy Ombati (Health)
