Nyamira County has today received the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Torch and Flame to mark 100 years of TVETs in Kenya to unlock the potential of youth to positively contribute to economic growth which is in line with the Bottom Up Economic Agenda (BETA).
The ceremony dubbed "TVET @100 Torch and Flame" was held at the County Headquarters.
In his speech,read by the CECM for Education and Vocational Training, CPA Emily Ongaga,the Governor hailed the move indicating that it will address the issue of unemployment and skill gaps.
"TVETs are key in realizing skills development to enable one compete in the job market",said Governor Nyaribo.
He also noted that the TVETs have existed since the colonial period and their main objective are to produce semi-skilled labour for industries, revealing that Nyamira has 5 Technical institutions and 43 Vocational Centres offering specialized training programmes among them; Masonry, Carpentry, plumbing, electrical and many others.
The County boss affirmed his support for TVETs and promised to offer Industrial Park jobs to those enrolled at the County TVETs .
" We shall select the right personnel from the TVETs, to provide the required labour at the Park " ,he emphasized.
To mark the centenary,Governor Nyaribo added that, his administration recognizes prior learning and soon they will establish a Certification Centre to enable learners receive certificates once they graduate for recognition and employment purposes.
Speaker after speaker, hailed the TVETs saying that they are vehicles that impart students with the requisite knowledge and skills to match the industry requirements and societal needs for enhancing employability.
Kabete National Technical was the first to receive the Torch which is set to go through TVET institutions across the Country and Climax celebrations, will be held in July 31st at the same institution.
