Fourteen Counties form an eminent persons committee to oversee region’s virus control.   

The Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) has installed a twenty one member committee that will help develop a strategy to mitigate the impact of Corona Virus.

The committee that constitutes eminent persons from the bloc that is made up of fourteen counties will also be expected to conduct a region-wide resource mobilization exercise to help fund the activities of the bloc in helping fight the pandemic.

Speaking during the inauguration exercise of the team at the Kisumu’s Jomo Kenyatta sports ground, the bloc’s chairperson who is also the Kakamega County Governor Hon Wycliffe Oparanya urged the eminent persons to scale up their activities now that they are knowledgeable on vast areas to ensure the region is safe from the Corona pandemic.

“ I urge this team(of eminent persons) to scale up their roles and put in place measures as a bloc to help mitigate this pandemic that seems to be spreading fast,” said Governor Oparanya adding that the disease should be well controlled on those already infected to avoid mass deaths.

Speaking at the event, Nyamira County Governor Honorable John Nyagarama urged the entire bloc’s members to put their all in controlling the spread of the virus within communities.

“I believe that integral relationship amongst member Counties will help in surveillance of the disease hence key in ending it,” added Governor Nyagarama.

Corona Virus was first discovered in Wuhan, China and has since spread all over the world with fatalities.

The event’s chief guest, Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i, who was represented by his Devolution counterpart Honorable Eugene Wamalwa, urged the bloc’s members to align their budgets towards meeting Covid-19 preparedness.

“It is important for member counties to work together to fight this pandemic,” said Dr Matiang’i adding that there is need for cross-county cooperation in handling this crisis.

He further urged both national and County government structures to work together to reduce the rise of the disease saying that a participatory approach is necessary to get desired targets.

Few resources

Kisumu Governor, Professor Anyang’ Nyongo, urged the member counties through the bloc to utilize the little resources available to fight the disease, an exercise he urged the eminent person’s team to help design local measures to counter Covid-19.

The chairman of the eminent persons Professor Khama Rogo promised that his team will do its best to encourage citizens within the region to follow the preventive protocols as provided by the ministry of Health to end this pandemic.

“Covid-19 is a Virus and we should fight it because it is fighting life and livelihood,” said Rogo adding that controlling the disease is by changing the way we live ,love and walk.

‘This disease is exploiting our weakest links hence the need for us to seal them like overcrowding,” added Rogo.

The bloc’s County Assemblies forum chairman, who is also the Nyamira County Assembly speaker Moffat Teya said that the County Assemblies are fully in support of the efforts being made to fight the pandemic adding that there is need for proper legislation.

Other County Governors present included Excellences’ Wilbur Otichillo (Vihiga),Cornel Rasanga (Siaya),Stephen Sang’(Nandi),Hillary Barchok (Bomet),Wycliffe Wangamati (Bungoma) and a host of some Deputy Governors.

Present also was the Nyanza Regional Commissioner Magu Mutindika.
